Benin : The Government wants to restore relations with Niger
The Beninese government is ready to « quickly restore relations » with Niger and its neighbors that have experienced coups, announced the president in his annual address to the nation.
« There is a time to condemn, a time to demand, and a time to take stock and take note, especially for Niger, it is time to rebuild ties with our neighbors for the development of the region », said Benin’s President Patrice Talon.
The head of state stated that « taking note requires our counterparts to play their part by clearly expressing their intentions, as well as their expectations from the international community. We must now forget the past and move forward together ». He added, « The ball is in the court of the de facto authorities, who must provide assurances ».
International and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sanctions against Niger have significant economic consequences for Benin due to the closure of borders between the two countries. Benin is particularly experiencing a decline in its port revenues due to the cessation of goods transit to Niger through its ports.
The giant pipeline connecting southeastern Niger to the Beninese coast, intended to market Niger’s crude oil internationally starting in January, is also a concern for both countries. Niger expects an increase in its oil revenues, while Benin anticipates transit fees compensating for lost customs revenues due to the sanctions.
