Burkina Faso : President of the Transition Presides Over Annual Meeting of the Superior Council of the Judiciary

On Thursday morning, Captain Ibrahim TRAORE, President of the Transition and Head of State, chaired the 2023 statutory meeting of the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSM). This annual meeting, mandated by the constitution, aims to discuss matters related to strengthening the independence of the judiciary.

The President of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, Mazobé Jean KONDE, emphasized the importance of this meeting, noting that the Head of State, as the guarantor of the independence of the judiciary, meets with the CSM every year. This edition was postponed due to scheduling constraints but remains crucial.

During the first part of the meeting, members of the CSM evaluated the performance of all the country’s jurisdictions over the past year. This evaluation highlighted points of satisfaction, shortcomings, and challenges to be addressed in the judicial system.

The issue of financial and economic delinquency, as well as the recovery of illicit assets, was also discussed. President KONDE stressed the importance of reflecting on this issue, noting that financial and economic delinquency can foster other forms of crime, including terrorism.

The meeting also addressed the functioning of the country’s courts and reforms in the justice sector. Captain Ibrahim TRAORE paid attention to the concerns of justice stakeholders and provided responses to the questions raised by the members of the CSM, demonstrating his commitment to strengthening the independence and efficiency of the judiciary.
