UN Legitimizes the Government in Niger

Since the coup d’état on July 26, the legitimacy of the transitional government has often been a central point of discussion in sub-regional and international meetings. This has remained the primary cause of tensions between Niger and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), as well as with other Western countries.

The authorities in power announced on Monday that they have obtained recognition from the United Nations Verification Commission.

« The Verification Commission of the United Nations General Assembly recognized on December 6, 2023 (A/78/605) the legitimacy of the Government resulting from the events of July 26, 2023 », stated a communiqué read on public television.

According to the communiqué, the Verification Commission of the United Nations General Assembly is simply applying a point of international law that admits no interpretation, unlike ECOWAS institutions, which stray in the analysis of community law and international law.

After several months, diplomatic efforts were needed to potentially reach a resolution to the crisis in Niger. In this regard, one could consider this decision by the United Nations as a welcome development, as it is expected to bring about a significant change in the course of events.

It’s worth noting that before this decision by the commission, the authorities could not participate in United Nations activities. With this recognition, Niger will likely be able to participate in the activities of major global institutions.

On December 10, the summit of ECOWAS heads of state and government also recognized the coup d’état on July 26 and decided to engage in discussions with the military authorities to develop a timetable for a « short-duration » transition.

If Niger can now enjoy its sovereignty, it is clear that there may be a move toward the lifting of ECOWAS sanctions, and not under any « conditions ». Will ECOWAS maintain Niger’s suspension from its institutions? If so, for what reason ? This is a story to follow…
