Togo/Niger: President of the CNSP on a Work and Friendship Visit to Lomé

Brigadier General Abdourahamane Tiani, Head of State of Niger and President of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), is undertaking a strategic visit to Lomé, Togo, on Friday, December 8, 2023. This mission, aimed at work and friendship, occurs within the framework of efforts deployed by the CNSP to resolve the crisis between Niger and ECOWAS.

Accompanied by several members of the CNSP and representatives of the Transitional Government, President Tiani seeks the support and mediation of Togo in the tense context with ECOWAS. This visit follows missions to Mali and Burkina Faso, further strengthening the relations among members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), established in September 2023.

Indeed, the Togolese President, Faure Gnassingbé, is being called upon as a mediator to ease tensions between Niger and ECOWAS. The crisis emerged following economic sanctions imposed by ECOWAS on Niger in response to the events of July 26, 2023, which led to the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum’s regime.

This visit to Lomé aims not only to reinforce diplomatic ties between Niger and Togo but, more importantly, to seek peaceful solutions to the complex situation between Niger and ECOWAS. Togo, as a potential mediator, plays a crucial role in seeking a peaceful resolution to this regional crisis. Discussions focus on how Togo can contribute to facilitating dialogue and promoting stability in the Sahel region.
