Burkina Faso: European Union is claiming to support Burkinabe people
On Tuesday, May 9th, the European Union announced an additional funding of 133 million Euros to finance two major projects as a gesture of compassion to the Burkinabe people, who have been hit by terrorism.
The ambassador of the European Union to Burkina Faso, Wolfram Vetter, spoke during Europe Day celebrations held every May 9 for the past 73 years.
«We do not close our eyes to the suffering of the Burkinabe people», he said.
He continued, « Burkina Faso is going through a very serious crisis with several challenges. It is with a broken heart that I see the sons and daughters of Burkina fall victim to terrorist attacks, suffer the consequences of insecurity, and face humanitarian challenges in a large part of the country», followed by his heartfelt condolences.
The diplomat stated that the European Union launched in March 2023 the stabilization program for the Ouaga-Kaya-Dori-Djibo axis, aiming at improving living conditions for 25 municipalities in the Center-North and Sahel regions in the long term.
The Ambassador also mentioned two other programs being prepared in the Ouaga-Koudougou-Dedougou -Bobo Dioulasso (OKDB) triangle to ensure food security for the populations.
These two projects are estimated at 133 million euros.
« And finally, a sum of 15 million euros is available to support the electoral process planned by the Transition and agreed with ECOWAS. Other support options are on the table, including in the areas of security and defense», he said.
The diplomat indicated that the actions of the European Union fully align with the priorities of the Transition.
He added that the European Union has no lessons to teach and respects the strategies and priorities of Burkina Faso in the fight against the common enemies that are the terrorists.
To conclude, Wolfram Vetter affirmed, « I wish for all Burkinabè that peace returns as soon as possible, and that you can build together, hand in hand, a new Burkina free from the scourge of terrorism.
