Togo: Fishing in Lake Nangbeto resumes on November 15

In Togo, fishing in Lake Nangbéto is again authorized from November 15, 2022. The information comes from the Minister of Maritime Economy, Fisheries and Coastal Protection, Edem Tengue.

The ministerial press release of November 10, however, announces measures to be respected for the prevention of the ecosystem of the said lake.

Among the set of measures, the ban on the use of gillnets or cast nets with meshes smaller than two and a half fingers, the shore seine, the traps of less than three fingers and bamboo.

« The same is true for traditional practices, such as acadja / attidja, barré-barré, or even unbaited longline and the use of toxic products, » said Minister Tengue.

After a three-month truce, fishing activities are resuming on Lake Nangbéto, one of the main providers of the country’s fisheries sector.

The usual biological rest established within the framework of management measures, aims to promote the repopulation of the lake in halieutic resources, to ensure their sustainability in the interest of present and future generations.

Despite the low availability of fish products, the fishing sector plays an important role in the Togolese economy.

It contributes 4% to agricultural GDP and 1.3% to national GDP.
