Benin/France: What exactly are the Beninese authorities hiding about the French bases in northern Benin?
The autocratic regime of Benin’s President Patrice Talon is vigorously denying accusations from Nigerien and Burkinabe authorities that French military bases are operating in northern Benin.
Despite these denials, mounting evidence suggests otherwise, pointing to Benin’s possible manipulation by France.
Recent statements and actions by Beninese officials seem to lend credence to these accusations.
Initially, Benin’s leaders denied any French military presence following allegations from the Nigerien government.
However, Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré later reiterated these claims, asserting the existence of two French military bases near Kandi and Porga, equipped with well-maintained runways for supply aircraft.
Traoré claimed to possess concrete evidence supporting his assertions.
The response from Benin’s government spokesperson shifted abruptly, acknowledging the presence of what he termed “small military camps” intended to counter terrorists at the borders with Burkina Faso and Niger.
This acknowledgment marked a stark contrast from the earlier outright denials. The spokesperson even invited investigators to verify these claims, asserting that they would be permitted full access to Beninese territory.
However, this openness was called into question when an international journalist sought to investigate the matter.
Despite submitting an accreditation request more than a month and a half ago, the journalist has yet to receive approval, suggesting a deliberate effort to withhold information.
This development further fuels suspicions that Benin’s authorities are concealing the true nature of their military collaborations.
Reports indicate that French company Delair is set to deliver six new drones to Benin in the coming days.
This raises concerns about whether President Patrice Talon is transforming Benin into a strategic base for terrorist activities.
