Primoz Roglic withdraws from 2024 Tour de France after crash in 12th stage

In a major development at the 2024 Tour de France, Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic, riding for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, has withdrawn from the race following a crash during the 12th stage.

This marks Roglic’s third consecutive abandonment from the Tour. His team confirmed the decision on social media, citing the need for him to focus on future objectives after thorough medical evaluations.

Roglic’s exit came after a collision involving Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) 12 kilometers from the finish line, which left him with injuries to his right shoulder.

He finished the stage 2 minutes and 27 seconds behind the leaders, dropping to sixth place overall and allowing João Almeida (UAE Emirates) to climb to fourth.

The 34-year-old Roglic, who narrowly lost the 2020 Tour to Tadej Pogacar, has had a series of misfortunes in the race, including previous withdrawals in 2021 and 2022.

Despite a crucial role in Jonas Vingegaard’s 2022 victory, Roglic’s Tour de France ambitions remain unfulfilled.

As the 13th stage unfolds between Agen and Pau, Tadej Pogacar continues to hold the yellow jersey in the general classification.
