Brazil held to Goalless draw by Costa Rica in Copa America opener

Brazil kicked off their Copa America campaign on the night of Monday to Tuesday, June 25, at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, against Costa Rica.

Despite being one of the tournament favorites, Brazil managed only a goalless draw in their opening match.

Brazil, featuring stars like Rodrygo, Vinicius, and captain Marquinhos, aimed for a strong start, especially with Neymar absent due to injury.

However, Costa Rica’s resolute defense frustrated their efforts. Marquinhos thought he had scored just before halftime, but his goal was disallowed after a VAR review, leaving the score 0-0 at the break.

In the second half, despite several substitutions and numerous chances, Brazil couldn’t break through Costa Rica’s defensive wall.

The Ticos played a disciplined defensive game and successfully held off the Brazilian attack.

Brazil’s next match is against Paraguay on Friday, June 28. This draw leaves Brazil missing the chance to top Group D, a position held by Colombia after their 2-1 win over Paraguay.

Costa Rica’s achievement marked them as the second Central American team to keep a clean sheet against Brazil in a major senior tournament, following Honduras’ historic 2-0 win in the 2001 Copa America.
