Premier League set for Semi-Automatic offside technology revolution in 2024-2025 season

The Premier League is on the verge of yet another revolution with the introduction of semi-automatic offside technology set to become active in the upcoming 2024-2025 season. This announcement came via an official statement released by the Premier League on Thursday afternoon.

The semi-automatic offside detection technology will be a reality starting next season.

The system has been unanimously approved by the clubs in the top tier of English football and will be made available to match officials «after one of the breaks for international fixtures in the fall», which translates to either October or November.

«The technology will ensure quicker and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and will produce high-quality graphics to enhance the stadium experience and broadcasting», as stated in the announcement.

It’s worth noting that this technology is already in use in some of the biggest competitions globally, including the Champions League and Serie A.

In 2022, it was even utilized by FIFA during the World Cup in Qatar.

The precise details of the system that the English championship will utilize are yet to be determined.

How many cameras will be involved? Will a chip be integrated into the ball, similar to what was done during the last World Cup?

These questions will need answers in the coming months.
