Burkina Faso: Validation of the institutional architecture of the Alliance of Sahel States at the ministerial meeting in Ouagadougou

Ministers from the Alliance of Sahel States concluded their meeting in Ouagadougou, endorsing the legal and institutional framework for the upcoming Summit of Heads of State. Chaired by the delegations from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the meeting yielded significant proposals and recommendations for the future of the alliance.

Regarding the charter for the future Confederation, no revisions were deemed necessary, and the withdrawal of the Alliance of Sahel States from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was confirmed.

The Confederation’s creation will be rooted in historical references specific to the Sahel people, featuring institutional structures such as Heads of State summits, ministerial councils, and parliamentary representative sessions.

The issue of the Liptako Gourma Authority will be addressed at the next Heads of State summit, while the draft graphic charter of the Alliance of Sahel States was adopted.

Urgent actions will be taken to ensure its widespread acceptance among the population.

Among the recommendations put forth during the meeting are the development of the roadmap for the Sahel States Confederation, expediting the creation of the graphic charter for the Alliance of Sahel States, and establishing protocols concerning the distribution of responsibilities and the free movement of people and goods.

Ministers also expressed solidarity with Niger in the face of the confiscation of its assets by the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) through the Central Bank of West African States, demanding their immediate restitution.

A vote of thanks was extended to the Transition President of Burkina Faso Captain Ibrahim Traoré, for his patriotic commitment.
