France : Farmers’ Strike – Prime Minister Gabriel Attal Expected in Haute-Garonne

The French Prime Minister is expected in Haute-Garonne to engage with angry farmers who have been protesting in various regions of France for the past few days.

According to French media sources, citing the president of FNSEA, Arnaud Rousseau, « Gabriel Attal will be visiting Haute-Garonne this afternoon, where the anger of farmers is particularly strong ».

Matignon has not confirmed the location of the visit at this stage. Farmers are awaiting measures from the head of the government to address their distress as they mobilize across France, especially in Occitanie.

« Farmers are expecting coherent measures », said Arnaud Rousseau, the president of FNSEA, on Wednesday. After several days of farmer mobilization, including roadblocks on various axes in the country, the main agricultural union has submitted its list of demands to the government.

Among other things, the protesters demand French and European ecological measures. Angry farmers also contest the taxation of non-road diesel, which results in fuel prices that are too high for those who use agricultural machinery. FNSEA says it expects a « strong structural change ».

On Tuesday, a 36-year-old farmer named Alexandra Sonac died after being hit by a car at a blockade in Pamiers. Her death has plunged the entire valley where the victim’s family resides into grief.
