Mali/Algeria : Relations between Bamako and Algiers deteriorate
For several weeks now, relations between the authorities of the Republic of Mali and those of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria have taken a hit, leading to diplomatic tensions since December 2023.
Diplomatic tensions began with the summoning of the Algerian ambassador to Bamako, followed by the recall of diplomats by both countries. While the Algerian ambassador returned to Bamako after more than two weeks of being recalled to Algiers, the Malian ambassador accredited to Algeria did not do the same.
These tensions were heightened by the recent statement from the Malian government, formally accusing Algerian authorities of unfriendly acts, acts of hostility, and interference in Mali’s internal affairs. The government’s press release dated Thursday, January 25, mentions certain events disputed by Malian authorities.
According to the statement, Algerian authorities unilaterally impose a transition period on Malian authorities. They are also accused of welcoming and hosting subversive Malian citizens and those pursued by Malian justice for acts of terrorism.
The Malian government claims that in Algeria, there are representations of certain armed groups signatories to the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali from the Algerian process, which have now become terrorist actors. Malian authorities believe that their Algerian counterparts scorn Mali and consider it a doormat state.
It is noteworthy that these events have contributed to the cancellation of the Algiers Peace Agreement signed in 2015, the result of international mediation led at the time by Algeria. The Malian statement also calls on Algerian authorities to show common sense and respect for the values of good neighborliness.
