Togo : Suspension of poultry meat imports until further notice
Taking into account the complaint of local poultry producers gathered within the Council of the Interprofessional Poultry Sector of Togo (CIFA), the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Rural Development has temporarily banned the importation of frozen poultry meat. This measure aims to promote the flourishing of local production.
In a statement released on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, no more importation of frozen chickens into Togo. At least for a certain period. The invasion of the Togolese market by imported poultry meats has led to a decrease in sales of local products. Currently, over 70 tons of locally produced meat are stored in the cold rooms of abattoirs without buyers.
This measure is intended to « promote local production and consumption ». As specified in the statement, the ban is only temporary. It will remain in effect until the 70 tons of meat in the cold rooms are sold. At that point, imports can resume.
It’s worth noting that Togo’s decision to address this specific issue is similar to actions taken by Benin since April 2023. During a meeting with soybean producers in the Savalou commune, the Beninese Minister of Agriculture announced the imminent end of the importation of frozen chickens and eggs in Benin. «From December 31, 2024, no more eggs, no more frozen chicken will enter Benin. This means that we will no longer import them» , declared the minister.
The goal of the Beninese government in making such a decision is to promote the development of the local poultry sector. This decision is intended to be a lasting one to ensure the flourishing of local poultry production and simultaneously address a health issue.
