Tennis: Ons Jabeur faces controversy over Palestinian Solidarity

The Israeli Tennis Association has taken action against Tunisian tennis sensation Ons Jabeur, following her public show of support for the Palestinian cause through an Instagram story on October 11. In her message, Jabeur expressed her solidarity with the Palestinian people and called for peace. However, her stance has led to accusations of “incitement” and “support for a terrorist organization” by the ITA.

In response to these allegations, the Tunisian Ministry of Youth and Sports has released a statement expressing unequivocal support for Jabeur.

They have strongly criticized the defamation campaign against her and the complaint lodged by the Israeli tennis federation with both the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) with the aim of sanctioning the Tunisian player.

This incident has sparked a broader discussion about the treatment of athletes who openly advocate for the Palestinian cause, highlighting the challenges they may face in the world of sports.

Prominent Tunisian athlete, Olympic champion Ahmed Hafnaoui, has also shown his solidarity with the Palestinians, sharing messages of support and hope for their cause.
