Burkina Faso / Digital revolution under the presidency of Ibrahim Traoré: Regulation of social networks for quality information

Under the presidency of Ibrahim Traoré, the country is experiencing an unprecedented digital revolution, with bold measures aimed at reframing the world of social networks. A revolutionary draft law on the powers of the Superior Council of Communication (CSC) was adopted at the Council of Ministers on Wednesday.

From now on, profiles or pages with at least 5.000 subscribers will be subject to the same regulatory rules as those governing traditional media. This bold decision aims to put an end to the anarchy that sometimes reigns on social networks, while preserving freedom of expression and guaranteeing quality information for all.

Social networks have become an inescapable force in society. They are a powerful tool for positive change, but they can also be used in destructive ways. The aim is to promote responsible use of social media, while guaranteeing the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights.

This decision was enthusiastically welcomed by many citizens who were increasingly concerned about the spread of false information, hate speech and misinformation on social networks. It also reinforces the credibility of social media as a source of reliable information and informed public debate.
