International/ The International Monetary Fund at the UN: Climate emergency, debt relief and digital inclusion high on the agenda
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) highlighted three key messages during its participation at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, from 19 to 23 September. First, he stressed the urgency of acting on the climate crisis, recognizing its current significant impact. Second, the IMF has highlighted the need for debt relief for low-income countries. Finally, it promoted digital inclusion as a way to move towards a better future.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva particularly stressed the importance of climate change, saying it is already affecting the world significantly. She also pointed out that the debt of low-income countries had increased alarmingly, becoming a major burden.
Alongside these concerns, Ms Georgieva highlighted digital inclusion as a catalyst for global growth and prosperity, highlighting the need for cooperation and partnership to address current challenges. She also expressed the IMF’s intention to strengthen collaboration among international institutions.
In addition, at the event, the IMF Executive Director discussed efforts to increase climate finance with the UN Special Envoy. She also highlighted the IMF’s role in mobilizing the resources needed to support the development of domestic capital markets.
Finally, Ms Georgieva engaged with Member State representatives at the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, where they made commitments to accelerate the achievement of these goals by 2030. She also participated in the opening of the New York Stock Exchange and discussed the IMF’s mission to promote global economic growth, financial stability, international trade and global poverty reduction.
