Togo: The protagonists of the Sudanese crisis are in Lomé

The Togolese mediation is once again being called upon to resolve a crisis on the continent. The parties involved in the Sudanese crisis are in Lomé and have started consultations on July 23, 2023, in an attempt to reach an agreement between the different factions from Darfur.

This two-day meeting brings together politicians, political activists, academics, and members of civil society, among others.

Its aim is to provide an open framework for discussion to the Darfur leaders, which could help mitigate the effects of the war and preserve the unity of its society.

It’s important to note that the Lomé meeting does not undermine the ongoing peace talks led by Saudi Arabia, the United States, the United Nations, and the efforts of IGAD and neighboring countries.

With its recognized experience and tradition of mediation on the continent, Togo will contribute additional strategic approaches to resolving the  Sudanese crisis that has been going on for month and shaking the country.

Over 3,000 deaths have been reported in nearly four months of war between the paramilitaries (FSR) led by General Mohammad Hamdane Dagalo and the regular troops (SAF) led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane.

And nearly three million Sudanese have been forced to leave their homes, including over 600,000 going abroad.

If the negotiations being carried out simultaneously by Saudi Arabia, the United States, the United Nations, and other entities were to take longer to yield results, the actors participating in the Lomé consultations appear to have seriously opted for peace.

A step has been taken with the adoption of what can be termed a «roadmap» that commits the parties to concrete actions.

It’s worth mentioning that the stakeholders have decided to turn to Lomé’s good offices whenever the need arises. What could be more reassuring for peace in Darfur and Sudan as a whole.
