France/Libya: Nicolas Sarkozy on a trial in early 2025

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be tried in the case of the Libyan financing of his electoral campaign in early 2025 with 12 other people. Friday August 25, 2023, two magistrates signed the referral to the Paris Criminal Court of Nicolas Sarkozy and 12 people, for suspicion of Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign.

Nicolas Sarkozy has another appointment in court. he will find at his side, close collaborators, in particular Claude Guéant, former right-hand man of Nicolas Sarkozy, and Brice Hortefeux, former Minister of the Interior. in the case of Libya, he is charged with illegal campaign finance, embezzlement, passive bribery and related counts.

suspicions of Libyan financing of the 2007 presidential campaign of Nicolas Sarkozy appeared in 2011, following the fall of the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. indeed, according to some information, the late Libyan Muammar Gaddafi would have contributed financially to the campaign of the former French president.

Nicolas Sarkozy, having been involved in several legal proceedings, tries to deny these accusations and repeatedly denounces a plot to discredit him. In 2020, he was sentenced to three years in prison, including one year, in the so-called wiretapping case. he is also under investigation in the Bygmalion case, which concerns allegedly exceeding the campaign spending limit during his 2012 presidential campaign.

If Sarkozy is found guilty of the charges against him in the Libyan financing case, he risks a sentence of several years in prison and a substantial fine. the outcome of the trial, which will take place in early 2025, will mark an important turning point in the judicial career of the former French president.
