Niger: The new authorities are postponing a joint delegation of African Organizations
On Tuesday, the leaders of Niger asked for a postponement of a planned visit by a group of African and UN representatives to their capital, Niamey. This request is motivated by security reasons.
This negotiation delegation would include people from the Economic Community of Western Africa States (ECOWAS), the African Union AU, and the United Nations.
The leaders of Niger wrote a letter to inform that they cannot host with this group right now because of security problems.
The people who took over the government also say that a postponement of this visit is necessary for the same reason.
Last week, a group of negotiators came to Niamey to talk, but they had to leave quickly because they couldn’t meet with the new leaders.
On Monday night, Hamoudou Mahamadou the former Prime Minister of Niger stated in an interview on TV, that the new leaders want the group to come back on either Monday or Tuesday.
Ecowas scheduled another meeting on Thursday in order to find out a solution to that situation in Niger.
While some people are for a military intervention, many others prefer to solve things peacefully, without using war means.
At the same time, the United States said that they’re talking to the new leaders of Niger to try to get the old president, Mohamed Bazoum, released and put back in charge.
They are threatening to cut off their financial aid to Niamey, in case of a failure of the negotiations.
A little while ago, on July 26th, General Abd al-Rahman Tiani took over the government in Niger, and the president, Mohamed Bazoum, lost his power.
At the end of July, leaders from West Africa said that the takeover needs to be reversed in a week.
