Zimbabwe-Iran: Strengthening Alliances in the Face of Western Sanctions

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa met with his Iranian counterpart during an official visit to Harare last Thursday. During the meeting, Mnangagwa called for unity among countries facing Western sanctions, highlighting the precarious situation in which Zimbabwe and Iran find themselves due to the long-standing restrictions imposed on them.

Zimbabwe has suffered from Western sanctions for nearly 20 years, which has had a devastating impact on its economy and development. Similarly, Iran has also faced heavy economic sanctions imposed by Western powers due to its nuclear activities.

Mnangagwa emphasized the importance of dialogue between the two countries as common victims of Western sanctions.

He stated, «It is essential that we, the two victims of Western sanctions, talk to each other. The authors of these sanctions would not want us to engage, but because we are both victims, it is crucial that we show them that we are united».

To strengthen this alliance between the two nations, several agreements have been signed between Tehran and Harare.

Mnangagwa affirmed that Zimbabwe would faithfully adhere to these agreements and expressed his confidence in his Iranian counterpart, stating, « We have signed a record number of 12 MoUs (memorandums of understanding), and I have no doubt and assure you, my dear brother, that from our side, as Zimbabwe, we will religiously follow these MoUs».

This partnership between Zimbabwe and Iran demonstrates their shared determination to overcome the challenges posed by Western sanctions.

It also strengthens political and economic ties between the two countries, paving the way for closer cooperation in various fields.

It remains to be seen what impact this strengthened alliance will have on the lifting of Western sanctions and the economic situation of both nations.

Nevertheless, this initiative showcases Zimbabwe and Iran’s determination to resist external pressures and find alternative solutions to boost their development despite the obstacles imposed by the West.
