Burkina Faso / Health: When nutritional care exceeds expectations
Burkina Faso has just recorded a remarkable achievement in the fight against severe acute malnutrition. During the first half of 2026, more than nine out of ten children treated recovered their health, representing a cure rate of 92.12%. This figure exceeds the annual target set by national health authorities, which was at least 90%.
These data, made public by the Communication and Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Health, reflect a constant commitment on the ground.
They cover the first six months of 2026 and concern children admitted to nutritional care facilities for the most severe forms of malnutrition.
The result therefore exceeds the target set by health sector officials. In a difficult security and humanitarian context, marked by mass population displacements and limited access to certain areas, such a performance deserves to be highlighted at its true value.
It demonstrates that efforts to strengthen nutritional care for children are bearing fruit.
Behind this percentage lie thousands of young lives saved. Children regaining their strength, returning to school or play, escaping the irreversible consequences of malnutrition.
Behind this figure are also health workers, nutritionists, volunteers, and partners who, every day, often under precarious conditions, ensure screening, follow-up, and treatment of the most severe cases.
This success, however, must not mask the challenges that remain. Severe acute malnutrition continues to threaten many children, particularly in regions facing insecurity and forced displacement.
Maintaining this level of performance, or even improving it, will require consistent resources, robust logistics, and expanded health coverage.
Nevertheless, the milestone reached is significant. By exceeding their own annual target in the first half of the year, Burkinabe health authorities are sending a strong signal: that of a health system that resists, adapts, and achieves concrete results for the most vulnerable.
Praising this performance means recognizing the behind-the-scenes work accomplished by health teams and partners.
It also means recalling that the fight against malnutrition is a long-term battle that deserves sustained attention and continuous investment.
Burkina Faso is showing today that with determination and rigorous care, lives can be saved. An example to be saluted and supported.
