Florentino Pérez wins landslide victory in Real Madrid’s first contested election in 20 years
Florentino Pérez has secured another term as Real Madrid president after winning the club’s first contested presidential vote since 2006. The 79-year-old captured 65% of the ballots (21,741 votes), defeating challenger Enrique Riquelme, who received 35% (11,814 votes).
“Today, Real Madrid won. We’ve shown an example of democracy to the world,” Pérez said at a hotel near the Bernabéu. Riquelme conceded defeat.
Pérez, who has led the club since 2009 (and previously from 2000 to 2006), has overseen seven Champions League titles and seven LaLiga crowns.
The vote of sunday vote followed his surprise call for elections after two trophy-less seasons, seeking a mandate of confidence from club members.
