Togo: A Sahel Strategy for 2026–2028 to serve as a bridge between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the international community

Togo has officially launched its Sahel Strategy 2026-2028, an ambitious roadmap that reflects the determination of the country to play a leading role in resolving the crises shaking this strategic region of the continent. Championed by President Faure Gnassingbé, this initiative makes Togo an indispensable diplomatic actor, capable of engaging in dialogue with both the countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and traditional international partners.

In a context where tensions between Bamako, Ouagadougou, and Niamey on one side, and part of the international community on the other, continue to grow, Lomé offers a moderate voice, respected by all, to facilitate dialogue and prevent an escalation with unpredictable consequences.

The Sahel Strategy 2026-2028 is built on a major asset of Togo: the trust it enjoys from both the AES countries and Western powers, which gives it unique credibility to act as a mediator and facilitate exchanges.

President Faure Gnassingbé, who maintains strong personal relationships with AES leaders, particularly Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has convinced his peers that he is not an intermediary serving the interests of one camp against another, but a true peacemaker concerned with the future of the entire region.

This trust, patiently built over the years, is today the main diplomatic capital that Togo is investing in its Sahel mediation, for the benefit of all West African peoples.
