Burkina Faso: The Progressive People’s Revolution and the rise of aquaculture
One year after the launch of the Popular Progressive Revolution (RPP) under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso’s fisheries production sector has seen notable advances. The Agrosylvopastoral and Fisheries Offensive (OAPH) has enabled a structural transformation of the industry, placing floating cage fish farming at the heart of the country’s agricultural policy.
This innovative technique offers an alternative to traditional fishing methods by allowing increased and sustainable fish production.
The main objective of this offensive is to reduce the dependence of Burkina Faso on imported fishery products.
Thanks to the introduction of floating cages, several regions have observed a significant increase in fish production, thereby contributing to achieving food self-sufficiency in the fisheries sector.
This development has also strengthened food security for local communities and created new economic opportunities.
The results achieved during this first year demonstrate the growing efficiency of fish farming practices.
Many localities previously dependent on external fisheries resources are now experiencing sustainable economic development through the optimal management of ponds and floating cages. Improved yields have led to an increase in the number of jobs in this sector.
In summary, floating cage fish farming is proving to be a key pillar of Burkina Faso’s agrosylvopastoral policy.
The fisheries offensive not only stimulates local production but also promotes the emergence of a more resilient economy less dependent on imports.
