Burkina Faso: H.E. Madam Olivia Rouamba is staying in Geneva for the 6th Extraordinary Session of the IOM

Madam. Olivia Rouamba, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabe Abroad, is participating in the 6th Extraordinary Session of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

This session, which opened on Monday, May 15th in Geneva, Switzerland, brings together government delegations from several member countries of the IOM for two days at the International Conference Center in Geneva (CICG).

The main activity of this meeting is the election of a new director, and on Monday, Ms. Amy E. Pope was elected to head the organization for a five-year term starting from October 1st, 2023. The outgoing Director-General, Mr. AntĂ³nio Vitorino, was also a candidate in the election.

However, for the Burkinabe Minister of Foreign Affairs, the agenda of this visit to Geneva is to «show great interest in exchanges, both bilaterally and multilaterally, as the excellent framework for promoting and strengthening partnerships between states and with UN institutions».

Upon their arrival in Geneva on Sunday, May 14, 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and her delegation held a working session with Mr. Dieudonné Désiré W. Sougouri, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Burkina Faso to Geneva, and his team.

This working meeting defined the program of the Burkinabe delegation’s stay in Geneva and discussed the examination of working documents.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the United Nations agency responsible for migration.

It was established in 1951 and remains the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration. Its mission is based on the principle that well-governed migration benefits both migrants and society. The headquarters of the IOM is located in Geneva.
