Electricity/ Togo launches major grid upgrade to boost power access in six cities

Togo is undertaking a critical energy infrastructure upgrade, targeting six key cities Aného, Atakpamé, Kpalimé, Kara, Sokodé, and Dapaong—to address persistent issues like blackouts, voltage drops, and an aging network. The project, backed by a 6 billion CFA franc investment from the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), represents a significant step in the country’s modernization drive.

The scope of work includes rehabilitating 61 km of medium-voltage lines, installing 61 new transformer stations, and deploying 234 km of low-voltage lines. Upon completion, nearly 10,000 households and small businesses will gain a stable connection.

Beyond the infrastructure, the initiative carries profound socio-economic importance. Reliable electricity is expected to boost local commerce, improve educational and healthcare services, and enhance regional attractiveness for investment.

This effort aligns with the national strategy  of Togo to achieve 75% electricity coverage by the end of 2025 and universal access by 2030.

Modernizing the grid is not merely about providing light; it is a foundational move to support industrialization, spur private enterprise, and fundamentally improve living standards.
