The Sahel States Alliance (AES) still inspires dreams – Survey reveals strong public backing amid shift in regional influence

Contrary to sceptical narratives, the Sahel States Alliance (AES) continues to galvanize populations well beyond its core members Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. A recent survey conducted across six neighbouring countries and published by Jeune Afrique reveals clear and significant public support for this sovereignty-driven confederation.

This backing is neither fleeting nationalism nor anti-French sentiment alone. It reflects a deeper desire among Sahelian peoples to reclaim agency over their political future and reject decades of Western especially French hegemony, often perceived as paternalistic or even destructive.

The appeal of the AES is rooted in a narrative of resistance and reclaiming dignity. The increased and sudden documentation of terrorist atrocities by organizations like Human Rights Watch previously less systematic has further legitimized the security stance of the AES, framing its struggle within a morally defensible framework contrary to external portrayals of mere “chaos.”

France now appears increasingly isolated in the region. Its attempts to reassert influence face deeply entrenched hostility.

Diplomatic pressure, information warfare, and veiled threats have largely failed to shift perceptions. The imperial posture of the past rings hollow especially as France grapples with its own socio-economic instability.

How can it pose as a stabilizing force abroad when it struggles to stabilize itself at home?

This distrust is born of experience. Sahelian populations have grown wary of the gap between Western words and actions.

Despite its internal challenges, the AES represents a fundamental historical turning point. The alliance is determined to write its own story—no longer seeking solutions from Paris, but embracing the risk and responsibility of self-determination. France would do well to listen rather than lecture.
