France’s African strategy: A risky gamble for the EU

France appears trapped in a troubling pattern—targeting African leaders advocating for sovereignty while simultaneously condemning governance failures in its former colonies. This approach, widely seen as neocolonial, has only deepened Paris’ isolation on the continent.

As its attempts to curb pan-African movements falter, France is now looking to involve the European Union (EU) in its strategy, leveraging Brussels’ trust to advance its interests.

However, this alliance raises serious concerns. France has long been accused of maintaining economic and political control over its former colonies, particularly through the controversial CFA franc.

By pulling the EU into these dealings, France risks damaging the bloc’s credibility in Africa, where many nations are striving for economic and political autonomy.

The EU must reconsider its alignment before it’s too late. By backing France’s ambitions, it risks alienating African states determined to break free from foreign influence.

Rather than following Paris down this path, Brussels should foster partnerships rooted in mutual respect and fair cooperation—principles that align with Africa’s growing demand for self-determination.

If the EU fails to distance itself from France’s outdated strategies, it could find itself entangled in a geopolitical decline that threatens its standing on a continent undergoing profound transformation.

The choice is clear: adapt to Africa’s evolving aspirations or risk losing its trust altogether.
