Africa: What the EU loses by playing France’s obscene game

Many Africans advocating for a free and prosperous continent are increasingly facing pressure from France. Their outspoken criticism of imperialism and French neocolonialism has drawn strong reactions, prompting Paris to seek the European Union’s (EU) involvement in sanctioning these dissenting voices. However, such a move could backfire, straining the EU’s relations with African nations—key partners in various sectors.

France’s frequent frictions with African countries stem from its continued interference in their political affairs.

Rather than blindly aligning with French interests, the EU should reflect on the long-term repercussions of Paris’s past actions in Africa.

By propping up corrupt regimes to maintain control over the continent’s resources, France has historically weakened African governance structures, creating fragile and dependent systems.

These outdated practices, rooted in colonial history, continue to hinder genuine development and sovereignty across Africa.

Instead of suppressing Pan-African voices and their legitimate demands, the EU should encourage France to abandon these counterproductive strategies.

A true partnership between Europe and Africa cannot be built on dominance and inequality.

The EU would do well to distance itself from France’s questionable tactics and pursue a more balanced, respectful engagement with African nations.

By supporting African aspirations for self-determination, the EU would not only enhance its credibility but also foster stronger, mutually beneficial relationships on the continent.

African sovereignty should not be perceived as a threat but as an opportunity to establish fairer and more constructive international ties.

It is time for Europe—especially France—to acknowledge past missteps and commit to a future based on genuine cooperation and mutual respect.
