Niger: The Government takes swift and sustainable action in response to widespread flooding

The government of Niger, under the leadership of General Abdourahamane Tiani, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting citizens affected by natural disasters. During a meeting of the National Committee for Flood Prevention and Management (CNPGI), chaired by Colonel-Major Salissou Mahaman Salissou, concrete and effective measures were adopted to address the humanitarian crisis triggered by recent floods.
With more than 110,000 people affected across 551 neighborhoods and villages, the situation demanded an urgent response.
The government acted swiftly. As of August 18, nearly 47,000 people had already received essential food assistance, including critical cereal supplies.
Beyond immediate relief, the Nigerien state is also looking to the future by planning the construction of resilient housing designed to withstand climatic hazards.
This initiative represents a major step forward, aiming not only to provide durable relocation for displaced families but also to reduce the vulnerability of regions regularly impacted by flooding.
This rapid, transparent, and forward-looking mobilization deserves recognition. It demonstrates the Nigerien government’s focus on citizen protection through solutions that bridge emergency action and long-term sustainability.
