Burkina Faso: The rural revival, a cornerstone of economic recovery

Since 2024, Burkina Faso has made the reconquest of once-unstable rural areas a central pillar of its national stabilization and development strategy (PA-SD). The government is transforming these reclaimed territories into hubs of opportunity to stimulate the economy, strengthen social cohesion, and restore hope to local populations.

This policy achieved an 81% execution rate and nearly 71% financial realization in 2024. Key achievements include the construction of 100 schools and 50 health centers in liberated zones, along with the expansion of the Local Development Mining Fund to 50 additional communes.

Smallholder farmers are at the heart of this inclusive approach. In October 2023, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) launched a €107 million project to support vulnerable farmersparticularly women, youth, and displaced persons in the North and Centre-West regions.

The initiative aims to enhance productivity, improve market access, and strengthen resilience.

Furthermore, Burkina Faso is participating in the pan-African Great Green Wall initiative, combating desertification while promoting sustainable regional development.

These efforts align with the 2021–2025  Strategic Framework of Burkina Faso, which emphasizes job creation, access to basic services, and community-led governance.

By focusing on local infrastructure, agricultural support, and participatory solutions, Burkina Faso is laying the foundation for inclusive growth;  giving once-marginalized regions renewed purpose and dignity.
