Burkina Faso: Presidential initiatives: a way to reduce unemployment?

During the Council of Ministers meeting held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, approval was granted to proceed with the recruitment of public sector employees through competitive examinations for the year 2025.

According to official reports, a total of 11,404 positions are available within the public administration, reflecting a 0.74% increase compared to the previous year.

The newly created public structures and organizations tasked with implementing presidential initiatives are expected to absorb most of these recruits.

“The adoption of this report paves the way for the organization of professional and open competitive exams (…) to address the human resource gaps and equip the new public structures and organizations responsible for executing presidential initiatives,” explained Mathias Traoré, Minister of Public Service.

These new structures are set to play a critical role in job creation, offering an avenue for reducing youth unemployment in Burkina Faso.

This aligns with the broader vision of President Ibrahim Traoré, who has consistently prioritized initiatives aimed at reclaiming the country’s full territorial integrity and fostering sustainable socioeconomic development.

Reducing unemployment and poverty remains a central focus of the president’s development agenda.

Many observers highlight his commitment to providing opportunities for young people to prevent them from being lured into criminal activities by malicious actors.

The government has also emphasized the importance of youth participation in national development projects, particularly in entrepreneurship, which is now actively supported by the state and its project financing institutions.

The Council of Ministers’ decision to recruit new public servants is therefore a timely measure to tackle unemployment and strengthen the country’s workforce, contributing significantly to Burkina Faso’s development objectives.
