Niger: BBC suspended by the authorities for broadcasting false information

The transitional authorities in Niger have announced the suspension of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) across the entire national territory. This decision, communicated in the evening by the Minister of Communication, Posts, and Digital Economy, accuses the British broadcaster of disseminating what the authorities consider inaccurate reports about recent terrorist attacks in the country.

« The channel is suspended with immediate effect for a period of three months, » the minister declared, emphasizing the severity of the allegations.

According to Nigerien officials, the spread of false information undermines not only national stability but also ongoing efforts to secure the country against terrorist threats.

This move reflects the transitional government’s determination to uphold Niger’s sovereignty and shield public opinion from what they view as media manipulation.

It is part of a broader effort to regulate the coverage of sensitive issues in the current climate of heightened security and political tensions.
