Women’s cycling: Laâyoune and Tarfaya host the 16th edition of the International Sahara Challenge

From July 28 to 30, 2025, the southern provinces of Morocco will pulse to the rhythm of women’s cycling during the 16th edition of the International Sahara Challenge. This competition, which coincides with the celebration of the 26th anniversary of the Throne Day, brings together nearly 40 cyclists from Europe and Africa in a spirit of sport, perseverance, and solidarity.
Held in the regions of Laâyoune and Tarfaya, the event unfolds over three stages: a 100 km stretch between Akhefnir and Tarfaya, a second 36 km race linking Laâyoune to Foum El Oued via El Marssa, and finally, a 36 km closed circuit in El Marssa. The course showcases the region’s geographical diversity and its rich tourism potential.
The International Sahara Challenge has established itself as a key event for the promotion of women’s cycling in Morocco, especially in its southern provinces. It brings together top-level cyclists from countries such as Spain, France, England, Sweden, and Mauritania, alongside regional Moroccan clubs.
Beyond the competition, this sporting event sends a powerful message in favor of women’s empowerment through sport. It is part of a broader initiative led by the “Green March” association, which has been working for several years to develop and strengthen women’s cycling in this part of the Kingdom.
In parallel, the Challenge helps raise awareness among participants and spectators about the socio-economic development efforts underway in the southern provinces. The event reflects Morocco’s commitment to using sport as a tool for integration, equal opportunity, and regional influence.
The 16th edition of the event confirms the vitality of women’s cycling and strengthens the presence of this discipline within Morocco’s sporting landscape, while promoting a modern, dynamic, and inclusive image of the Moroccan Sahara.
