Guinea/Tragic Football Match claims lives amid political underpinnings

A football match in N’zérékoré, Guinea, turned deadly during the finale of a tournament organized in support of the ruling military junta. The incident, marked by violent clashes, claimed the lives of at least ten people, including children, and left many others injured.

The chaos erupted following controversial referee decisions that angered supporters, escalating into stone-throwing and a pitch invasion. Security forces responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd and evacuate officials, but this action exacerbated the situation.

Witnesses reported fatalities caused by suffocation from the gas and injuries sustained as people attempted to escape by scaling the stadium walls. Disturbingly, reports of sexual violence also emerged amid the disorder.

The tournament was reportedly dedicated to General Mamadi Doumbouya, the leader of the military junta who assumed power in September 2021. Similar events have become common across Guinea, often interpreted as rallying support for Doumbouya’s potential bid in future presidential elections.

A witness described the scene as spiraling from « a simple dispute over an officiating decision » to a full-scale tragedy.

While organizers framed the tournament as a community event, critics question the broader political motives behind such gatherings, particularly in a nation grappling with governance challenges under military rule.
