Burkina Faso: Mandatory wearing of helmets, a salutary measure to protect lives on the roads

In response to rising road accidents, the government of Burkina Faso has introduced a new regulation requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets. As of January 1, 2024, this mandate applies to new motorcycle buyers, and by January 1, 2025, it will be compulsory for all riders.

Statistics from the National Road Safety Office (ONASER) reveal that 295 fatalities were recorded in road accidents during the first quarter of 2024.

Helmets play a critical role in preventing severe injuries, particularly head trauma, and significantly reduce the risk of death in accidents.

Additionally, they help ease the burden on emergency medical services, which are often overwhelmed.

This measure calls for the active participation of riders, passengers, and motorcycle dealers, who are required to provide helmets with every bike sold. Such collective responsibility is vital to enhancing road safety and protecting lives.

Wearing a helmet is not just about complying with the law; it is an act of self-preservation and care for others. By embracing this new rule, Burkinabe citizens contribute to building safer roads and safeguarding their future.
