Togo extends student healthcare coverage through school holidays

Togo’s government will maintain student health coverage during school breaks through its “School AMU” program, the National Health Insurance Institute announced. Public school students can present alternative enrollment proof (school IDs, report cards) when accessing care at participating facilities.

The measure extends the presidential “School Assur” initiative (launched 2017) now integrated into Togo’s Universal Health Coverage system. Healthcare providers must include school identification on medical records for tracking purposes.

“This ensures uninterrupted care whether schools are open or closed,” explained an education ministry official. The policy particularly benefits rural students who previously lost access during long vacations.

Togo’s AMU program has expanded healthcare coverage to 80% of citizens since 2022, with student health being a key component. The holiday provision demonstrates the government’s commitment to both educational and medical equity.
