Togo / COP29 in Baku: Togolese President calls for climate justice for shared sustainable development

During his speech at the global climate action summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, on November 12, 2024, Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé emphasized the urgent need to establish global climate justice. Speaking at COP29, he stressed that climate justice should be at the forefront of international discussions in light of the planet’s pressing environmental challenges.

We cannot reverse this trend alone. Climate justice must be the guiding principle of all our conversations,” said President Gnassingbé, calling for coordinated global action to support countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

He also highlighted the importance of providing climate financing tailored to the specific needs of developing nations to protect at-risk populations and safeguard biodiversity.

The President further pointed out that an inclusive approach is essential, one that takes local realities into account, as the challenges of adaptation are often more complex for emerging economies and rural communities.

He called for flexible financial mechanisms and urged the international community to turn commitments into concrete actions, stressing that climate solidarity must go beyond rhetoric and translate into tangible investments.

On a national level, President Gnassingbé outlined Togo’s efforts to integrate sustainability into its development model, through initiatives like reforestation and a shift toward renewable energy.

He concluded by calling for stronger international cooperation to ensure a sustainable and equitable future for all, especially the most vulnerable nations.
