Mali reclaims control of its territory under Colonel Assimi Goïta’s leadership

Under the leadership of Colonel Assimi Goïta, Mali is regaining control over its territory, showing significant progress in the fight against terrorism. The recent success of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) in the Kidal region underscores this advancement.

On July 22, 2024, FAMa units captured the locality of Ib-Afarak, situated about 122 km northwest of Kidal. This strategic move represents a key development in securing the border with Algeria. The General Staff of the Armed Forces announced this crucial victory, emphasizing the significance of Ib-Afarak as a major commercial and trafficking hub.

Ib-Afarak, the last village before the Algerian border, had become a critical point for various illegal activities, including arms and drug trafficking. The FAMa’s recapture of this area is a pivotal step in national defense and in safeguarding the people and their property. This operation is part of a larger strategy implemented by Colonel Goïta to restore security and integrity to Mali.

Since taking office, Colonel Assimi Goïta has pursued rigorous military reforms and strategies to combat terrorism and reestablish state authority throughout Mali. His efforts involve enhancing the FAMa’s capabilities, improving coordination with allied forces, and developing specific action plans for each region affected by insecurity.

This development also sends a strong message to terrorist groups, affirming Mali’s commitment to ending their reign of terror. With ongoing operations and targeted strategies, Colonel Goïta and the FAMa are working tirelessly to free Mali from the clutches of terrorism.
