Africa: Senegal dominates Mauritania in a tense match during the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers

In a match in Nouakchott, Senegal maintained its top position in the World Cup 2026 qualifying group by defeating Mauritania on the fourth matchday.

Despite the absence of their star player Sadio Mané, the Lions of Teranga demonstrated their determination from the kickoff, adopting an offensive 3-4-3 tactical system. However, the long-awaited goal came only in the 27th minute thanks to Habib Diallo, who converted a decisive pass from Pape Matar Sarr into a superb goal.

The rest of the match was a real battle between the two teams, with Mauritania desperately seeking to equalize but facing a solid defense from Senegal. Despite their efforts, the Mourabitounes failed to find the back of the net, allowing Senegal to win 1-0.

This victory is particularly important for Senegal, which maintains its leadership position in the qualifying group with 8 points, narrowly ahead of Sudan and the DRC, each with 7 points. For Mauritania, however, the quest for their first win in these qualifiers remains a challenge, with only 1 point in the standings after four matches.

The road to the 2026 World Cup remains fraught with obstacles for all teams involved, but Senegal continues to assert its position as a serious contender for the global tournament.
