Niger: Beginning of the withdrawal process of American troops from Niamey

In line with the wishes of Nigerien authorities, military cooperation between the United States and Niger has come to an end. This decision was made by Niamey as part of its drive towards national sovereignty. As a result, Niamey and Washington have reached an agreement for the withdrawal of the 1.100 American soldiers stationed in the country.

According to reports, the disengagement process for these military personnel has already begun and will be completed by September 15, according to the agreement reached by both parties. This agreement ensures the protection of American soldiers until their departure from Niger and establishes procedures to facilitate the entry and exit of American personnel during the process.

Furthermore, the agreement stipulates the continuation of relations between the two countries even after the departure of American troops. Another key point of the agreement is that « Niger and the United States commit to diplomatic dialogue to define the future of their bilateral relations ».

The events that led Niamey to break all military cooperation with the United States are related to American threats towards the new authorities regarding their strategic rapprochements with Russia and Iran. This condescending attitude from Washington prompted Nigerien President General Abdourahamane Tiani to terminate the defense agreement, which had been imposed on the country.
