Mali: President Assimi Goïta unveils new Solar Power Plant in Safo

Shortly after launching a 200-megawatt solar power plant in Sanankoroba, Transition President Assimi Goïta continues his momentum by inaugurating the construction of a new 100-megawatt solar power plant in Safo, in the Koulikoro region, on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. This project, realized in partnership with China, symbolizes Mali’s commitment to a sustainable energy transition.

The Safo solar power plant will cover an area of 228 hectares and will be equipped with monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic modules, known for their high performance and longevity. This installation, with a capacity of 100 megawatts, is expected to play a crucial role in improving electricity supply in Mali, a country facing significant energy challenges.

According to Bintou Camara, Minister of Energy and Water, the construction of these solar power plants illustrates President Goïta’s vision to modernize Mali’s energy system by focusing on renewable energies. This approach aims not only to increase the country’s energy capacity but also to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower electricity production costs, and promote sustainable development.

The Safo project is the result of collaboration with China, a key partner in developing Mali’s energy infrastructure. This cooperation highlights Mali’s willingness to partner with international actors to accelerate its energy transition and benefit from advanced technologies.

Beyond the immediate increase in energy capacity, these initiatives aim to create a favorable environment for investment and sustainable development. They also demonstrate Mali’s commitment to playing an active role in the global fight against climate change by adopting green energy solutions.
