Niger/Economic sovereignty: Authorities encourage and support private initiatives

Determined to build a strong and resilient economy for the benefit of the population and the country’s social development, the authorities of the Republic of Niger are sparing no effort.

In addition to the ongoing state-led structural projects aimed at boosting industrialization—seen as a key driver of economic growth—private sector initiatives are being actively encouraged and supported by the nation’s highest officials.

The recent groundbreaking for yet another steel rebar manufacturing plant in the country aligns with this vision of Niger’s leadership.

According to reports, the factory, spearheaded by a Chinese company, is expected to create 361 permanent jobs, providing valuable employment opportunities for Nigeriens.

Moreover, the establishment of this facility reflects the government’s commitment to locally processing raw materials and stimulating the national economy.

With an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons, which could potentially increase to 100,000 tons, the plant is set to make a significant contribution to Niger’s local and national economy. It will also meet the country’s demand for rebar, reducing the need for imports in this sector.

Niger’s Minister of Industry highlighted that “this new factory will strengthen the construction sector, improve the country’s trade balance, and create new opportunities for Nigerien businesses.”

The government has reiterated its commitment to promoting industrialization as a path toward economic sovereignty and sustainable development.
