Burkina Faso launches national drive to harness Artificial Intelligence

In a significant step towards digital sovereignty, Burkina Faso officially launched a major national campaign on October 28, 2025, to understand and master the challenges of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Presided over by the Minister of Digital Transition, Posts and Electronic Communications, Dr. Aminata Zerbo/Sabane, the initiative aims to position the West African nation as a conscious and responsible actor in the global digital revolution.

The minister emphasized that AI is “not just a technological tool, but a strategic lever for the digital sovereignty of Burkina Faso.”

The campaign, themed around AI’s role in strategic information and communication, brings together key institutions, researchers, and civil society.

Its dual objective is to educate citizens on AI’s opportunities while highlighting associated ethical, security, and misinformation risks.

Discussions focused on critical areas such as personal data protection, cybersecurity, and the ethical use of AI in media and public governance.

This launch marks the first phase in developing a national AI strategy tailored to the country’s socio-economic realities, underscoring Burkina Faso’s determination to be an informed participant not a passive subject in the AI revolution.
