Energy/ Togo embraces battery storage to stabilize grid and boost renewables

As Togo intensifies its efforts to diversify its energy mix and strengthen the role of renewables in its electrical system, the authorities are now opening a new chapter: battery storage. This technological solution, still uncommon in West Africa, is set to play a key role in stabilizing the national grid and intelligently managing energy production.
Ongoing studies aim to define the scope for a storage project with a planned capacity of 55 MW a strategic milestone for the country’s energy transition.
This work will also lay the groundwork for a national roadmap dedicated to the gradual integration of storage systems into Togo’s electrical infrastructure.
In the government’s vision, championed by the Ministry Delegate to the President for Energy and Mines, Togo has set a goal of achieving universal access to electricity by 2030.

This objective is paired with a clear ambition to increase the share of renewables to 63% of the installed capacity, up from the current level of approximately 26%.
To achieve this, the country plans a progressive deployment of storage capacity, targeting 156 MWh to be installed by 2030, compared to only 4 MWh currently operational.
This development will help secure the power supply, reduce losses linked to solar intermittency, and enable better management of national demand.
