Boxing: Ghana bans all Boxing after second fighter death six months

Ghana has imposed an immediate nationwide suspension of all boxing activities following the death of super-middleweight Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey, marking the second professional fighter fatality in the country within six months.
The 32-year-old boxer died Tuesday at LEKMA Hospital in Accra, eleven days after being stopped in the eighth round by Jacob Dickson at Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12.
While initially diagnosed with malaria post-fight, doctors discovered additional complications during his hospitalization, according to his manager Shatta Roco.
The National Sports Authority, working with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, called the suspension a “necessary step to protect lives and uphold sporting integrity.” Authorities are fast-tracking a comprehensive five-year safety reform plan overseen by a nine-member Interim Management Committee.
This tragedy follows the March death of Nigerian fighter Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a bout in Accra and died shortly after hospitalization.
The suspension deals a significant blow to Ghana’s boxing scene, which has produced legends like Azumah Nelson and enjoys massive local popularity.
Officials promise that when boxing returns, it will operate “under safer, more professional, and globally aligned standards” with strengthened medical, technical, and regulatory procedures to prevent future tragedies.
