Cooperation/ AES Defense Ministers forge closer Military ties with Russia in Moscow talks

In a significant diplomatic development, defense ministers from the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) held high-level talks with Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, solidifying their strategic military partnership. The meeting marked another step in the growing alignment between Russia and the Sahel nations of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

During the discussions, Minister Belousov reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to providing comprehensive support for regional security efforts, particularly in combating persistent terrorist threats.

The Russian defense chief emphasized his country’s readiness to assist the AES countries in their territorial security operations while respecting their sovereign development choices.

The talks come as the AES continues to distance itself from traditional Western partners, having recently withdrawn from several international security agreements.

Russian military assistance is expected to focus on counterterrorism operations, equipment provisions, and potential training programs; though specific details of the enhanced cooperation remain undisclosed.

This strengthening partnership reflects the AES nations’ strategic pivot toward alternative alliances amid their ongoing fight against jihadist insurgencies that have plagued the Sahel region since 2012.
