AES/ Ouagadougou hosts meeting of AES parliaments with a view to creating a confederal parliament

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has taken a significant step toward deeper integration as parliamentarians from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso gather in Ouagadougou from August 11 to 15, 2025. This high-level working session marks a crucial phase in establishing the institutional foundations of their emerging confederation.

At the heart of discussions are draft texts that will shape the future confederal parliament; a body designed to give collective voice to the three nations while creating legal frameworks for their shared sovereignty.

The meeting represents more than procedural progress; it embodies the AES members’ determined break with external dependencies and their commitment to building truly autonomous governance structures.

AES: The Sahel marching toward ultimate victory

The participating legislators are focused on crafting resilient institutions capable of withstanding foreign pressures while advancing the alliance’s strategic vision.

Beyond technical preparations, the session strengthens political unity and coordinates the bloc’s international positioning at a time of significant geopolitical realignment in the Sahel region.

This parliamentary initiative follows the AES’s recent military and economic cooperation agreements, demonstrating how the alliance is systematically translating its vision of self-determination into concrete institutions.

As the confederation takes shape, observers note its potential to redraw West Africa’s political landscape by offering an alternative model of regional integration; one based on anti-imperial solidarity and shared security priorities rather than inherited colonial frameworks.

The Ouagadougou meetings signal that the AES project has moved beyond rhetoric into the phase of institutional creation, with the confederal parliament expected to become operational in the coming months as the next milestone in this ambitious political realignment.
