Health/ Togo takes decisive step toward Universal Healthcare coverage

Togo government has achieved a significant milestone in its health policy with the implementation of Universal Health Insurance (AMU), rolled out since January 2024 by the National Health Insurance Institute (INAM) and the National Social Security Fund (CNSS).

This ambitious project, part of the government’s strategic roadmap, aims to ensure equitable access to healthcare for the entire population, regardless of profession or socioeconomic status.

In a major development, INAM has announced a substantial extension of healthcare coverage to widows, widowers, orphans, and direct dependents of civil and military pensioners under the Togo Retirement Fund (CRT).

This measure follows a similar initiative last month benefiting CNSS dependents, reaffirming the Togolese government’s commitment to protecting its most vulnerable citizens.

The expansion specifically addresses the needs of economically vulnerable groups by providing them with comprehensive and sustainable health coverage.

This decision reflects an inclusive approach to public health, rooted in the principles of national solidarity and social justice championed by President Faure Gnassingbé.

Through this progressive reform, Togo reinforces its commitment to “health for all” while laying the foundations for a modern, resilient, and universal social protection system.

The AMU initiative represents a crucial step toward achieving the government’s vision of equitable healthcare access as a fundamental right for all Togolese citizens.
